30 years ago, I started a private list to assist my clients, friends and family members who were in need of experts in a variety of different fields. I still refer people to it the list – now called The Best of Orange County List. I’ve also made it available to the public.
As far as choosing a PR firm, we have done some of the legwork for you. We currently have 5 public relations firms that we can recommend.
It’s a different sort of thing than similar lists out there. To be listed, the person or company must receive numerous high marks based on personal experience from our investigative staff. You can’t buy your way on to the list (although a few have tried). The list has also achieved some modest fanfare – it’s been featured in print, radio and television.
During the past year, I’ve had a few clients ask me for a referral to a top-notch public relations firm either here in Orange County or just in the general Southern California area.
If you look at our press section, you’ll find a collection of some of the news clippings we’ve collected over the last 36 years. I think we are doing something right.
On May 16, our public relations firm secured us 6 radio shows across the United States in a 4-hour window with Fox News Radio. One of the topics to be discussed is Seeing Life Through Private Eyes, a new book I’ve written that will be in bookstores June 16, 2017. In my experience, obtaining this news coverage is far better than paying for advertisements of any type.
The PR world is similar to that of the PI world: There is one on every corner, and many of them are full of malarkey. Over the years, we have retained the services of many major, well-known firms as well as small mom and pop boutique shops. We have had success with both types.
Whatever your needs, please keep in mind you want to retain a firm that understands they are in the persuasion business. They must be excellent storytellers to your particular business audience.
They should not be a firm with fancy pie-charts and endless babble about what makes them different, what they can only do and how savvy their veteran strategists are with the news media. They shouldn’t take 60-90 days to get you a simple radio or print interview under the guise of “preparing your portfolio.” This is utter nonsense and a way to glean two months of your retainer for doing nothing.
Similarly, hold your public relations firm to the same standards.
Never sign a six-month contract. Always, insist on a month to month contract that can be terminated at anytime for any reason. Don’t pay three to five thousand dollars a month for an extended period of time. You will never come close to getting a return on your money.
When you go month-to-month, watch how fast they charge out of the gate. If they don’t produce in the first 30 days, then terminate them. Either they have media contacts or they don’t. Either you are in print, on radio or television – or you are not.
Pretty simple stuff.
As far as choosing a PR firm, we have done some of the legwork for you, and we currently have 5 public relations firms that we can recommend. We have worked with all of them, and depending on what it is you are looking to do, we can help you with a recommendation. Some firms are better suited with manufacturing companies or the political arena, while others are better suited for the computer industry. Whatever you make, donuts, widgets or golf balls, we have the firm for you.
More importantly, we also possess the knowledge and expertise in the firm(s) you may not want to walk from but sprint from.
We do not charge for this service as we look forward to assisting you in raising your public awareness and, more importantly, increasing your revenue stream.
Please contact us with your needs and we will have someone on our staff respond to your request.
