Employee and Non-Employee Theft

The United States Chamber of Commerce has reported that a company employee is 15 times more likely to steal from their employer as is a non-employee of the company. This is due to their location inside the company in some cases. About 75% of employee-related crimes, it is estimated, go unnoticed.

Employers are sometimes reluctant to report thefts by employees to the police. They fear negative publicity, but this leaves criminals free to continue stealing. Theft by trusted employees happens in cities of all sizes, but local law enforcement agencies may not have the resources or time to investigate the theft. As a result of these concerns, many businesses hire investigative service companies to look into employee theft.

What Will the Investigative Service Do?

A qualified investigator will check over your company’s books, along with your accountants, looking for indications of wrongdoing. Employees are more attracted by opportunities to steal than they are by the physical need for money. Many employee thefts are never detected by management. In a shocking statistic, less than 10% of employees are responsible for over 95% of total employee theft losses.
