Having been a private investigator for 4 decades, I know that the business has huge peaks and valleys – and they are consistently never the same. I often say, “One month you can buy a Mercedes Benz, and the next month you may not have enough gas money for it.”
However, one fairly consistent assignment occurs between the first week of November and Christmas. There’s a tremendous spike in people that contact our offices because they want us to locate friends and family for the holidays.
For these locate jobs, we have our own proprietary in-house computer system called US UNITE. I helped create this system back in 1981, after I left the Department of Justice. US UNITE has grown to be one of the most formidable systems in the United States. In the marketing for it, we state “If we can’t find them, they won’t be found.” And that’s nearly always how it works.
During the first 10 months of a year, we receive about 15-20 locate requests per week. During November until Christmas, we will get 40-50 calls per week – inquiring about locating all sorts of individuals. They range from disconnected family members, high school sweethearts, military friends, college buddies, former co-workers and neighbors.
We find about 98.4% of the people we look for. That is in part directly related to the vastness of the data contained within the US UNITE system. Most Internet-based locate sites have a swimming pool of information while US UNITE is like having a Pacific Ocean full of names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses.
The truth is that we won’t take your money if there is little or no chance of getting you a bingo.
There are some rules. We’ll need the name, first and last. If it’s unusual or uncommon, that is generally all we need. If the subject has a common name, we will need ONE of the following:
- A date of birth
- A social security numbers.
- A last known address within 10 years
