Information leaks make headlines, as with the Edward Snowden/NSA case. Former Federal agent Thomas Martin, now president of Martin Investigative Services in Newport Beach, California, sees cases every day involving people in the business and private sectors falling victim to moles and leaks, often costing millions of dollars.
“Be careful how you share information,” Martin warns, having discovered leaks from surprising sources in the course of his career. Including a crystal ball.
Clients with famous names and high net worth often turn to Martin because of his background and reputation. When he was approached by an international business mogul divorcing a Hollywood actress to determine how he was being blindsided in court each day, Martin and his team of investigators, all former federal agents as well, quickly eliminated the obvious sources including wire taps, computer breaches and listening devices. And yet the daily damage in court kept coming.
Martin went old school, walking his client through every second of his day, and finally got the source. His client, considering it his own secret weapon, was having a nightly chat with his personal psychic, going over his strategy for the next day.
Shaking his head, Martin said, “I broke the news that we now had at least part of our leak identified, and instructed my client to feed his psychic a lot of false information – totally legal to do – and then watched as the case began to rapidly fall apart in court the next day.”
The case was quickly settled for pennies on the dollar rather than the millions she had been seeking. The wife didn’t want to damage her career with public evidence that she had been soliciting leaks… from the psychic as well as her husband’s driver, whom she had taken to sleeping with in exchange for information. Martin reminds people that sometimes, leaks are very low tech.
A transcript of the video follows:
One of my most famous clients was an executive in Los Angeles, New York and Switzerland. He counted his money with a “B” not an “M.” He was at a cross-road in his marriage and he wanted to get somebody to find out why he was getting clobbered in court. He could not understand that every time he did A, B and C the other side knew about it.
So we eliminated wiretaps and all this other sort of thing and we just started looking at what he would do in his entire day. Who did he talk to? Who is the mole here? Who is the informant? At the end of the day, we couldn’t figure it out.
Finally, after about a week this gentleman came to me and said, “You know, you can’t figure it out and my psychic can’t figure it out.”
I said, “Psychic? When do you talk to your psychic?”
He said to me, “I talk to her pretty regular especially at night to go over the day’s activities so I know what is going to happen the next day.”
Of course my heart fell and I told him, “When you talk to her tonight here is what I want you to tell her. I want you to tell her the following pack of lies so that the other side will think this is what we are going to do. Just try and smoke her out.”
And it worked.
What was happening each day is he would go back on his phone, he would talk to the psychic and the psychic would then call his wife and tell her what the game plan was. So at the end of the day by giving this false information which is totally legal to do and by them accepting that information they quickly found out that their case was falling apart.
We quickly learned that the wife was dating my client’s driver who he also spoke with. So it was like a double whammy, our guy had no chance at all.
Once this all was uncovered he was obviously very grateful and the settlement, which could have been in the millions and million of dollars, was settled for ten cents on the dollar because the wife was an actress in Hollywood and she did not want this getting out.
