Back in April, we featured this post about Dylan, an emotionally-troubled teen that was subjected to unspeakable abuses at the hand of his mother while in her custody. Born with short stature syndrome and treated with HGH for 10 years, he had severe dental problems as a result of medications and his teeth were literally rotting.
Dylan didn’t smile – at all. As his father, Cary, who is a long time friend of mine, wrote in the original post: I have, on occasion, found Dylan in a fetal position crying and saying he just can’t go on because he hates his life because of his mouth!
Cary set-up a Go Fund Me post for Dylan with the hopes of raising the necessary funds for dental care in the amount of $4,000. Once the story was published, the funds were raised in a matter of a few weeks. In addition, an Orange County foundation heard about Dylan and his story. They agreed to match all the funds raised in an effort to provide the necessary follow-up regarding future dental hygiene.
I finally got a picture of Dylan’s new smile (attached). He just radiates. For those that know his back story, just a simple smile is pretty miraculous in, and of, itself.
After years of hiding his smile, he still finds it a bit awkward to smile, especially for the camera, hence only one photo, so far. His life is still full of challenges, but he smiles at the kindness and generosity of strangers. There’s a glimmer of hope in that radiant smile.
We would especially like to thank Dr. Hair and his staff for their amazing oral artistry. Yesterday I was at Dr. Hair’s office and he advised me that he will continue to monitor the progress of Dylan and make sure he gets regular check-ups and maintenance.
We had many donations of $10 to $20 which were extremely important in reaching our goal. We had just as many who were not in a position monetarily to help but did offer their prayers and support. All of these gestures were humbly accepted and graciously appreciated by Dylan and his family.
Amazing how you all just changed a life. Thank you.
